"Hope, like the gleaming taper’s light, Adorns and cheers our way;
Every gift of noble origin Is breathed upon by Hope’s perpetual breath."

— William Wordsworth (1770–1850)

  New!     National Donor Day                       Feb. 10, 2001

Wimp or Warrior? The double-dare challenge is here!
This woman was no wimp!

How can you help? You can:

  • Give blood or fill out a pledge form
  • Register with the National Marrow Donor Program
  • Sign up as an organ and tissue donor

What is the CMLSupport.com double-dare challenge? It's a dare for you to register as a bone marrow donor and to drag along a family member or friend to get registered along with you. If my mom could do it, so can you. Come on — just do it. Write to me if you and a buddy sign up, and I'll add you to my CMLSupport Registry.

National Donor Day Set For Feb. 10

Troy, Mich. — For the fourth year in a row, Saturn Corp., its United Auto Worker (UAW) partners and many of America’s leading non-profit health organizations will join together in a nationwide effort to save lives.

On Saturday, February 10, 2001, participating Saturn retail facilities will host National Donor Day.
Blood drives will be available at many locations and where not available, blood donation may be pledged. Visitors may join the National Marrow Donor Program’s (NMDP) Registry of potential marrow and blood stem cell donors. Anyone between the ages of 18-60 and in good general health can join — all it takes is a simple blood test. All Donor Day visitors will be encouraged to fill out an organ and tissue donor card and tell their loved ones of their decision to become an organ and tissue donor.

“We believe National Donor Day is the largest annual one-day blood, organ and tissue donation drive in America,” said Jill Lajdziak, Saturn vice president of sales, service and marketing. “Thanks to the success of the first three National Donor Days, our 437 Saturn retailers and our non-profit health partners have collected over 25,000 units of blood, and added over 4,000 potential donors to the National Marrow Donor Program’s Registry."

The need for donation is great. Approximately 10,000 life-saving transfusions take place daily, yet fewer than five percent of Americans donate blood. Winter months, including February, are often times of critical blood shortages. Each year more than 30,000 people are diagnosed with diseases that can be cured by a marrow or blood stem cell transplant – 70% of them will need an unrelated donor for their transplant. Nearly 75,000 patients are currently awaiting organ donation for a life-saving transplant, and sadly, an average of sixteen die every day because a suitable donor is not found in time.

"We believe National Donor Day is the largest annual one-day blood, organ and tissue donation drive in America."

"For the past three years, National Donor Day has helped to raise awareness of the desperate need for increased organ and tissue donation." said Corey Green, Saturn UAW sales, service and marketing advisor. "We are proud of our results to date, but much more life-saving work remains to be done.”
